Jordan's Story
written by mom DeAnna

January 11 2005, Jordan and Jacob were born. I was a difficult pregnancy. I often had morning sickness. They were so tiny compared to Joshua my oldest son. We were happy, they finally arrived and were healthy.

They were a challenge, not sleeping well and attending to twins and a three year old was just exhausting. They were getting older, each day was getting better, it was finally getting easier. Then Jordan was not feeling well.

It was the spring of 2007. He had never been a good sleeper. Each morning Jordan would not stand up in the crib and cry for me to pick him up. I thought at the time he was not fully awake and just wanted to be held. It became more and more of Jordan waking up from a nap or the first thing in the morning. Jordan and Jacob were taking speech class and I was going to a Mom’s morning Day out class. I would often have to cancel the classes for he was not feeling well.

This had been going on for about 6-8 weeks. We thought it was maybe an ear infection, but each time we went to the doctor, we were told it was a virus and it would pass. Then we went for a chest x-ray. Jordan was breathing kind of shallow. I know now that he was probably in a lot of pain, each breath was painful for him, but he was only 2 years old and could not communicate to me how he felt. I was getting tired and frustrated for I worked at night and then when I came home he would get up as my head hit the pillow. Crying, “Mamma Rock The Baby” over and over again. We spent many nights in that chair.

I knew something else was wrong, for kids just don't get sick all the time. It wasn't a flu or cold or a virus. What was it? Why was he so uncomfortable? He was limping, but we thought he had just fallen or the dog had knocked him over. I called the doctor again, "Something is wrong. I need to see you today!! He is sick again, and nothing is making him feel better".

When we did finally get a blood test done, I was panicking. I was calling every hour for the tests to come back. I knew something was not right. I finally got a call back that something was showing up in the blood work, but they didn’t know what. I was told to pack a bag. We check in to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. I pack a bag and took all the kids to the hospital with me, and called my husband to meet us. It took 2 weeks, many tests, 5 bone marrow aspirations and several doctors.

On June 14th 2007, he finally got a diagnose of Leukemia. I was first told it was a bone infection and I was also told it was not Leukemia, and then later told it was. My husband and I were looking at the white board of what the different diagnoses it may be. It seems silly now, but we were trying to pick which cancer we wanted it to be. I felt like it was a nightmare. I would close my eyes and I would wake up and this would be gone. I just could not believe this was happening. Leukemia! Would I lose my son? My aunt had adult Leukemia and she could not find a marrow donor and passed away. Joshua and Jacob would cry for me to come home. Why don’t you just come home to us, we miss you!

Each day I am reminded that this is my life for now. Jordan will get through this, he is strong. We try not to think about relapse and the what if. We can only live today. Most people don’t know or understand why Leukemia has to be treated so long. We questioned that ourselves. Jordan is doing well on chemo treatment. He picks out the pills he hates the most, and says he doesn’t want to take those, but does. He still screams with each injection. The doctors said it would get easier. I don’t know if it is any easier, we just do what we have to do. This is our normal.
